Happy New Year, Desire, and Suffering: Another Attempt

Preface:

Okay.  I submit to the overwhelming pressure of readers–one in particular–of my blog to re-post my defecatory New Year’s shout-out.  I suppose a good, committed writer should have no fears, experience no self-doubt nor give in to personal second guessing about what words one puts on paper or the computer monitor.  But I did, worrying a little too much about possible negative reactions to me addressing my biological functions in order to satirize the whole new year’s resolution thing and more importantly, worrying too much about readers’ opinions of me.  I suppose, though, for anyone who already knows me and my writing and the way I perceive the world in absurd terms, the notion that I could disappoint them and lower myself more in their eyes by writing absurdly and grotesquely in order to make them laugh from deep in their gut is indeed absurd.  They probably expect even more absurdity, profanity, and grotesqueness from me than what I have delivered so far in any of my writing.  And they probably deserve it!  (Go ahead and laugh, all you *&%%$&s, $$%(*)*&(rs, *@%$%$^%$$s!!!!!  (Hee, hee…I love y’all!)

So here’s the piece I originally posted on New Years Day with only a couple of minor edits.  Also, I forgot the original post title, but I think the new one is close enough.  I think the colon(ized) title makes this a very serious piece! (Is that an unintended, unconscious, grotesque pun I just typed that inadvertently refers back to the introduction of the piece?  I think so!!!  Whoopee!) Continue reading

Tonight’s football game…

Springville 16   Woods Cross 12

It was an excellent game.  Not a lopsided win for the home team this time.

Woods Cross, a Salt Lake area high school looked bigger than my high school team.  Eventually, their strength helped them almost overcome an early deficit created by early Springville big plays for touchdowns.

But the home team played clutch defense, stopping three drives deep in Springville’s territory that included one missed Woods Cross field goal.

It was in the cool, almost chilly night air during the last quarter where hyped nerves joined to make a dramatic conclusion to an interesting experience for me. Continue reading

What kind of man am I? (“The question.”)

It was a week ago today.  The first football game I had attended in years.

The weather was cold, with drizzling rain and light snow showers in the mountains and an occasional lonely flake finding its way to where I was sitting in the visitors’ bleachers.

Across the field was my high school football team playing in a first round state playoff game.  The home team bleachers were about half full.

I could have sat there if I’d really wanted to.  There was plenty of room, but I didn’t want to take the chance that someone might recognize me and ask me what I’m up to. Continue reading

Taking out the garbage.

I was taking care of all my little bedtime preparations a couple of hours ago including taking garbage out to the dumpster while trying to distract my two cats, Baldo and Chica, from their preoccupation with food, when I noticed how pleasant it was outside.

Baldo and Chica had followed me outside—they follow figuring, based on past experience, that I’ll eventually give in to their food cravings and persistent pleadings—and I sat down on a picnic table bench between my father’s unused motorized chair (where Baldo has recently taken to sitting as if it is his) and another nearby bench where Chica normally sits (and which she would eventually settle on).

I sat down, straightened my back and stretched my neck—my body’s principal stress indicator—and looked up at the star-filled night sky before closing my eyes and deeply inhaling and exhaling. Continue reading
