I don't mess much with the code, actually. I search for Wordpress themes--my website database/format choice--that have enough customization controls so I don't have to learn to use html or php code. I can play around with some code, but I always save copies of existing pages before messing with anything so I can simply reinsert the original code if something doesn't work. Most often, I just google my specific question regarding formatting changes and often find there are forum discussions that have already addressed my question. Sometimes the technical exchanges are beyond my skill level to properly integrate them into my site, though. My short answer to your question. I haven't altered the menu bar. I can customize the header image, though. I learned how to do it when I started using a couple of free Wordpress themes developed by Chris Pearson http://www.pearsonified.com/themes (Instructions and software are included and linked to the Cutline and Neoclassical themes).
